This morning, the country woke up to the sad news that Rakesh Roshan has been diagnosed with early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the throat. Hrithik Roshan took to social media to reveal the news on the day of his surgery, and assured fans that “he is in full spirits today as he proceeds to battle it”.
WHAT IS SQUAMOUS CELL CARCINOMA?
Squamous cell carcinoma of the throat is characterised by an uncontrolled growth of the flat cells lining the throat. The most commonly affected parts of the throat are the larynx (voice box) and the pharynx (the passageway leading from the mouth and nose to the lungs and stomach). Symptoms of this type of cancer include difficulty in swallowing, hoarseness in the voice, sore throat and coughing up blood.
