The Maratha community constitutes over 30 per cent of the State’s population.
The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on Thursday unanimously passed a Bill without discussion that grants 16 per cent reservation to the Maratha community in education and government jobs. The Bill is expected to be tabled in the Legislative Council later in the day.

Earlier, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis tabled the Action Taken Report on the State Backward Class Commission’s recommendation for Maratha quota.

The Maratha community, which constitutes over 30 per cent of the State’s population, has been demanding reservation in government jobs and education for a long time.

The Dhangar community too have been demanding a similar reservation, but Mr. Fadnavis said decision would be taken after the State’s Backward Class Commission submitted a report.
