Beware of the luxe tyre thieves in Delhi

Thieves in west Delhi’s Rajouri Garden and Tagore Garden have found a novel method to make money. Stealing vehicles involve too many risks, so these petty criminals have started stealing the tyres of new middle segment cars that are expensive and easy to dispose of in the booming spare parts market.

The tyres of at least 15 luxury cars were stolen in the 48 hours. The booming number of such thefts has left Delhi.

Police officers baffled while residents are pointing fingers at policing. Some of these incidents have been caught on CCTV cameras and the thieves can be seen dismantling the wheel of the cars in seven minutes flat.
Interestingly, one such theft took place close to the residence of senior Delhi Congress leader Ajay Maken. In some instances, the thieves have been captured on CCTV cameras, easily stealing the tyres with impunity. Local residents allege that the police have failed to make a breakthrough in any case of theft in the past two days.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Delhi.) Monika Bhardwaj, however, said that the police had “crucial leads in this case”. “We have identified the car and the accused. Our teams are working on it,” she added.

Residents of the area say that there was no police patrol in the neighbourhood and the streetlights don’t work. This has given criminals the courage and cover to act. The residents say most of the thefts have taken place between 3 am to 5 am.

“They have all the equipment for dismantling a car, especially tyres. They basically target middle segment new cars and dismantle a tyre in seven minutes,” said an area resident who did not want to be named.

The police say the thefts are being conducted by a gang of three to four. “Only one member of the gang is an expert in dismantling tyres. The other works as the driver, while another remains seated in the back to keep an eye on the surroundings,” said a local police official.

According to the police, these petty criminals know the lay of the area very well that’s why they strike in these neighbourhoods. After these incidents, the police have deployed cops in plainclothes to keep an eye on any such thefts.
